Teachers strike affects local schools

FIVE schools in the Henley area were affected by a teachers’ strike yesterday.

The walkout was called by the National Union of Teachers and was part of a day of action by public sector workers in a long-running row over pay, pensions and conditions. Twenty-seven schools in Oxfordshire and seven in Berkshire were entirely or partially closed and teachers joined marches in Reading and London. Badgemore and Trinity primaries both closed for the day but none of the other schools in the town or The Henley College were affected. In Sonning Common, the primary school shut and Chiltern Edge secondary was open to year 11 only while Langtree School in Woodcote was closed to pupils in years 7 and 8. Daniel Sadler, headteacher of Chiltern Edge, said: “My primary consideration is for safety and we are unable to guarantee adequate supervision through the day. “The conditions of teachers contracts mean that I am not allowed to re-allocate staff who are not striking to cover the classes or duties of those who are. “I do really regret not being able to educate students on this day and apologise for the difficulties that this will undoubtedly cause for families.” For more information:
