Nature reserve launches appeal to replace pathways

A NATURE reserve by the River Thames in Goring has launched an appeal to raise £115,000 for phase two of a project to replace a boardwalk and footbridge.

Withymead Nature Reserve wants to fully replace the old, narrow boardwalk and footbridge to improve access for visitors.

Phase two of the project will provide a new 60m section of accessible boardwalk and a 13m-long custom-designed bison bridge with step fire access and handrails. These will be made from recycled plastic for durability.

The existing structures are coming to the end of their life due to annual exposure to floodwater and are difficult for people using wheelchairs and pushchairs to use.

By replacing them, they will connect with last year’s new section to reinstate the continuous loop through wetland reedbeds, allowing visitors to complete a circular walk through the reserve.

The appeal organisers said that about 340 boards are needed, excluding the bridge, which works out at about £158 per board.

The “buy a board” appeal allows people to donate a wooden board located within the reserve.

Those who donated can choose to be recognised on both the board and an online virtual donor wall.

Jenny Hedge, who chairs the trustees of the reserve, said: "Completing a fully accessible route around the reserve will transform the experience of all our visitors."
