World Book Day: St Mary’s School, Henley

CHILDREN and staff at St Mary’s School in Henley marked World Book Day by wearing pyjamas and bringing their favourite bedtime stories and teddy bears to lessons.

Pupils read poems in front of the school. Nursery children read Hey Diddle Diddle the Cat and the Fiddle, reception class performed Rumble in the Jungle and Year 4 performed Gran, Can You Rap? complete with three rapping “grannies” in wigs.

The lunch menu and included Mr McGregor’s salad patch from Peter Rabbit, I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato Pasta from Charlie and Lola and Winnie the Pooh’s honey cake.

In the afternoon, the children took part in the Big Read, reading their favourite books quietly in the school hall.

Rosie Wilkinson, head of English and year 3 form teacher, said: “We love celebrating World Book Day as it allows us to embrace the joy of reading and nurture a love of literature in school.

“We know how important reading is for developing children’s understanding of the world and their imagination and it’s a wonderful opportunity to delve into all things literary.”
