Boys win schools triathlon and raise £100 for primary

FOUR boys at Goring Primary School won a schools triathlon competition.

Edward Williams, Eddie Lancaster, Elliot Parsley and Oscar Franklin were first in the year 3 and 4 group at the event held at Bradfield College.

The nine-year-olds each had to swim 50m, cycle 1,000m and run 750m.

They were among more than 850 pupils from local schools who took part in the event organised by Restless Development, a global organisation which supports children in leadership.

The Goring boys, who called themselves “3 ES and an O” after the initial letters of their Christian names, raised more than £100 for their school’s parents, teachers and friends association.

Edward said the event was “really fun” and they were happy to have won.

“I told all my friends and they were really happy and jumped about,” he said. “We got to stand up in assembly.”

Oscar said: “We were celebrating in the playground and I jumped on my friend’s back and told him to run around.

“The running was my favourite part as I do lots of sport and I’m really good and play football for two teams. At school, we do lots of running practice.” He said the cycle ride was the hardest part, adding: “I had to go round a big bend and almost fell off.”

His mother, Anne, 40, a lead nurse at Royal Berkshire Hospital, said: “This is the first time Oscar has done something like this and I’m very proud.”

Eddie said the event was “fun” and “exciting”.

His mother, Kirstin, 44, said: “He said his favourite leg was the cycling and he liked celebrating at the end with candy floss.”

The boys hope to compete again next year when they will be in year five but will be competing with pupils in the year above them.

Edward’s father, Jonathan, 53, of Springhill Road, Goring, said: “The event was well organised. Everyone loved it.”
