Boat cruise dinner in aid of scout hut work

ABOUT £1,000 was raised at a black-tie event which took place onboard Hobbs of Henley’s Hibernia on Friday.

The Valentine-themed event was in aid of 1st Henley Scouts’ plans to refurbish their building in Greys Road, which is more than 50 years old, and replace the roof.

The roof was last replaced in 1996 and is now in a poor state of repair. Other improvements include the acoustics in the main hall, the toilets, the entrance lobby, side rooms and the kitchen.

Prosecco was served ahead of the boat’s departure and a complimentary buffet meal with wine was served during the journey.

Alma Acoustics, a female vocalist and guitarist duo from 8 Ray Music, performed. There were games such as heads and tails, a raffle and an auction with prizes including meal vouchers for restaurants in Henley. Derek Harding, chairman of 1st Henley Scouts, said: “We need about £40,000 to £50,000 to replace the roof and we’ve probably raised around £25,000 so far. We’ve been working really hard and had some big donations, which are really helpful.”

Mayor Rory Hunt, who attended with his father, Ian, said: “It was a really enjoyable evening and it was good to meet people who have helped the scouts throughout the year.”
