THERE was mixed fortunes for local sides in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup with Woodcote making it through to the next round after a penalty shoot-out while Henley Town were knocked out at the first round stage.
WOODCOTE travelled to CHALGROVE CAVALIERS on Saturday, a side that play in the Premier Division of the Oxon Senior League, and found themselves 2-0 down against physical opponents until deep into the second half.
On 70 minutes Andy Taylor’s free kick found Sam Primmer whose looping shot found the net for 2-1. Minutes later, the impressive Mark Spruyt scored, combining well with Toby Nowell before slamming the ball into the roof of the net.
Woodcote won the penalty shoot-out 4-3 with Nowell, Ben Rusher, James Taylor and Andy Taylor finding the net from the spot and keeper Ben Lallament saving one of the Chalgrove kicks.
HENLEY TOWN crashed out of the tournament after going down 2-0 at EASINGTON SPORTS, who play in step five in the United Counties League, on Tuesday of last week.
With the home side competing two divisions above Town it was always going to be a hard task but they gave a good account of themselves and had opportunities to take the lead in the first half when both Harry Taylor and Matt Forster came close with long-range efforts that narrowly missed the target.
Easington had the majority of possession but the Henley defence stayed strong and went into the break level.
The second half was a much more even affair but Easington took the lead on 55 minutes when Joshua Yeboah headed home from a corner that keeper Ben Palmer was unable to keep out.
Henley created further chances with Taylor again having a shot on the turn and their best chance coming from a cross by Adam Palmer that nobody could get a touch to tap home.
With 10 minutes remaining and the visitors pushing forward the Town defence switched off and let Easington break down the right flank allowing Jacob Humphries to break through and finish neatly past Palmer.
WARGRAVE progressed in the Charles Twelftree Trophy after running out 2-0 winners at SHRIVENHAM last Saturday.
Shrivenham hit the post from a miscued cross in the first minute. The visitors created several chances before Sam Wild opened the scoring after 36 minutes.
Good work from Callum Brighton and Teddy Thomas helped assist captain Stuart Moss to make it 2-0 shortly before half-time. Wargrave made more chances in the second half but couldn’t convert any and defended well when needed.
ROTHERFIELD UNITED DEVELOPMENT crashed out of the Oxfordshire FA Trophy after going down 3-2 at home to CHESTERTON RESERVES.
