A CAPACITY crowd watched award-winning singer Rag ’n’ Bone Man at the opening night of this year’s Henley Festival.
He appeared on the “floating” stage as Wednesday’s headliner in front of 6,400 people, who were dressed in their finest black-tie and evening wear.
Many revellers arrived early to take in the other attractions, including a “garden” featuring 17 sculptures by the riverside and a variety of street performers.
The temperature was around 20C and dry as Rag ’n’ Bone Man — real name Rory Charles Graham — took to the stage. The other headliners this week are Westlife, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Ministry of Sound featuring DJ Danny Rampling and Boney M featuring original lead singer Liz Mitchell and the Ronnie Scott’s jazz club.
Local musicians who will perform include Adam Isaac, from Sonning Common, who has undergone a kidney transplant since he appeared last year.
Festival chief executive Jo Bausor said: “The only thing that can top our 40th birthday last year is the 41st. It is a tough act to follow but we are looking forward to this event. We feel like we have catered for everyone this year as the programme covers everyone from 18 to 80. Rag ’n’ Bone Man appealed to everyone and we know that Nile Rodgers gets everyone singing along.
“We have a couple of new additions this year — guests will be welcomed by our innovative sculpture garden containing about 17 sculptures.
“We have also taken a risk this year and incorporated water into our firework display — water jets will dance in time to the fireworks, creating a feast for the eyes. I am very excited.”
