JUNE marked the final meeting for Dave Adamson in his year as president of Henley Lions Club. He handed over the role for the coming year to John Moore.
Dave was thanked for all the work, effort and ideas that he so enthusiastically brought to the club during his year in office.
We were informed of the sad news of the passing of Mick Mortimer, a great friend and willing helper at many Lions events and husband of past president Linda. The couple were much missed when they retired to the West Country.
Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
The Riverside Counselling Service has been helped and supported by Henley Lions Club for a number of years and it was agreed at this meeting to make a further donation of £1,000.
The service, which relies on donations and grants, provides professional, affordable counselling to adults and young people from the age of 12 within the local community.
Another great organisation we help and support is the Bluebells Day Centre, which provides activities and social engagement for people suffering from dementia and related disabilities within a safe and friendly environment.
We have previously supplied the required specialist chairs and due to an increased membership, two more of these chairs are on order and will be paid for by the club.
We are looking forward to an evening with Henley Bowling Club and a club barbecue together with several summer fundraising events.
Thanks go to the many, many people who have donated their used spectacles. Collection boxes can be found in GP surgeries, opticians and Tesco.
We will be taking these to a collection point in Chichester and from there they will go to be checked, graded and repaired, if required, and sent to other countries where they may be unattainable or unaffordable to the local population. So much more useful than sitting in a drawer at home.
There are so many people and voluntary organisations that require help in different ways. If you would like to get involved, please do join us at our monthly business meeting to see if this is something that you can do.
We are just ordinary people, sometimes trying to do extraordinary things and enjoying ourselves along the way. We meet on the first Monday of the month in the Margaret Day room at King’s Arms Barn, of the King’s Road (Waitrose) car park at 7.30pm.
You will be made very welcome and I’m sure you will be surprised at just how much help is needed in and around our town.
