Village pub to be featured in TV reality show

THE pub in Hambleden will appear in the latest series of a TV reality show next week.

The Stag and Huntsman will feature in Channel 4’s Four in a Bed in which four bed and breakfast owners stay at each other’s business for a night and then rate them by paying what they think their visit was worth.

The week’s winner is the B&B with the highest overall rating.

The Stag and Huntsman, which is part of the Culden Faw Estate and managed by South African Marius Pretorius and his partner Sarah Harris, will be featured in Thursday’s episode.

The 19th century pub was competing against businesses in Yorkshire, Manchester and Gloucestershire.

Mr Pretorius, who is originally from Johannesburg, said the episode was filmed in July.

He said: “Four in a Bed had been contacting me for some time. We came to the conclusion that all publicity is good publicity so decided to go for it. While we are happy with what we do here, we won’t know how we will be portrayed until we see the programme for the first time.

“There is a lot of pressure to come across well and remain professional, given that you know people will be dissecting your every move.

“We felt, win or lose, always remain professional and put the needs of the business first.”

The couple took their guests to Marlow Rowing Club. Mr Pretorius said: “Because of the history of our area, with the regatta and rowing clubs, we thought that would be the best place to take them. It seemed only right.

“We were with a great mother and daughter team from North Yorkshire and a fantastic couple from Manchester who ran an airport hotel. They were very nice people.

“But you could feel a little bit of negative energy from the elderly couple [from Gloucestershire].

“That might just have been because of a clash of cultures. They were very traditional English people and we were the newbies.

“After we visited the elderly couple, they got a bit of negative feedback from the different groups.

“I would be surprised if we got too much negativity from the others. It will be interesting to see.

“We just took every day as it came and tried to remain professional. It is about having fun and marketing a business.”

Miss Harris said: “We know nothing of what has been said on camera about me, Marius or The Stag and Huntsman so watching it will be eye-opening.”

Four in a Bed is shown on Channel 4 daily at 5pm.
