Flotilla to celebrate coronation

A BOAT parade is to take place on the River Thames in Henley for the King’s coronation.

The organisers of the Thames Traditional Boat Festival, in association with Henley Town Council, are planning a coronation flotilla from Hambleden Lock to Marsh Lock on Monday, May 8, starting at 2pm.

They want charities to set up stalls along the banks to sell drinks, cakes, sandwiches or souvenirs to raise funds. Litter picking will be obligatory.

The organisers have been contacting boat owners, including those whose boats do not pass the stringent entry criteria for the annual festival, which takes place in summer, such as the “Elvis boat” and the Macmillan Duck which are seen on the river during different Henley events.

Lady McAlpine, of Fawley Hill, who co-chairs the
festival, said: “All are welcome and the committee hopes that boat owners and passengers will dress themselves and their boats for the coronation.

“We plan to have bands playing but buskers will be welcome too.” The King’s swan marker, David Barber, who lives in Henley, has registered his interest and offered to bring a couple of Swan Upping boats.

Gillian Nahum, of Henley Sales & Charter, also wants to contribute.
