Golf club raises £14,350 for cancer charity

A GOLF club in has raised £14,350 for a cancer charity in Wargrave.

Hennerton Golf Club, in Crazies Hill Road, presented the cheque to Macmillan Cancer Support.

The money was raised by members of the club through various events including night golf, a race night and a charity day in September.

Fifty per cent of the money will go to the Berkshire branch of Macmillan Cancer Support to help people who are diagnosed and their families.

Mark Clements, chair of central Berkshire fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “In Berkshire we have the Royal Berkshire Hospital and Macmillan helped set up the cancer centre, which has some tremendous nurses.

“The idea is to make sure people are supported from start to finish of their treatment. The money will be used to partly fund nurses and providing an overall service, including advising people what benefits are available. It’s been a tremendous effort by the club. We’re very grateful and impressed.”

Two new captains, Lars Swann and Carol McIntosh, completed their putt-in before golfers headed off for 18 holes. They chose the Household Cavalry Foundation, which supports its serving soldiers, operational casualties, veterans and dependants. It also supports its heritage and the welfare of its retired horses.

Ms McIntosh, 71, who was also captain in 2004, said she would like to support veteran golfers during her captaincy. She said: “My niece was 50 years old when she died in the RAF, so in lots of ways it’s personal. These people fight for us, and their lives change, but there they are helping.

“I would love to do something for the ones who used to play golf, as it would have been a big part of their lives. For those who have lost a limb or suffer mentally, it would be good to have days where we could bring them in and start getting them playing just one or two holes.”
