Memorial ride for charity (plus cake)

Memorial ride for charity (plus cake)

A GROUP of cyclists from Henley will be riding long distances for charity tomorrow (Saturday).

Up to 80 members of GS Henley Cycling Club will be taking part in the fourth annual ride in aid of Sue Ryder.

The event is held in memory of Graeme Taylor, a former club member, who was cared for by the charity before his death from cancer in 2021.

The cyclists will ride either 40km, 50km or 65km rides, all starting and finishing at Henley Rugby Club in Marlow Road.

Cyclist Anna Zatouroff said: “The ride started in Graeme’s memory but has also become a celebration of cycling so we are keen for anyone to come along.

“We hope about 70 or 80 people will take part. Last year we raised about £2,000 and we are aiming to match that this year.”

She added: “Cycling is just the best thing and makes me feel 12 again. The freedom is wonderful and it is such a good way to see the countryside.”

The ride is for mixed abilities and the club is encouraging riders to come in fancy dress and dust off their vintage bikes.

Ms Zatouroff said: “The shorter route goes through town and then up Greys Road to Nettlebed, Cookley Green, Christmas Common and back via Turville Heath and Skirmett.

“The medium one goes out to Watlington and Nuffield and the long route goes via Rotherfield Greys and Highmoor to Watlington and back.

“If the weather is good it will be fabulous as we live in such a glorious part of the country.”

The rides will begin between 8.30am to 9.30am and entry costs £10.

Free cake will be available outside Menza Cafe after the ride and a Graeme Taylor Prize will be awarded to the most “inspirational” rider on the day.

Ms Zatouroff said: “We are holding a raffle too with great prizes ranging from private penny-farthing lessons to massages. There will be lots of homemade cakes as a treat — cycling is all about cake and coffee.”
