LOCATED in the Wheel Orchard car park behind the Catherine Wheel pub, Barbara’s Bric-a-Brac has been established for 35 years.
People are still happily browsing the two packed floors of this fascinating shop — including a recent visit by
Absolutely Fabulous creator Jennifer Saunders.
Barbara’s has been run for most of its existence by the present owner, Maddy Bateman.
She bought the business in 1986 from its original owner, Barbara Fraser, who continued to work for a while in the shop on a part-time basis and still has contact with Maddy and her team at least once a week.
Working closely with Maddy now is her daughter, Nikki Sharman, who has recently moved to Goring for this reason.
You’ll see many different faces behind the counter at Barbara’s. That’s because 25 different dealers rent shelves within the shop and display — and regularly update — their many types of stock which they obtain from auctions, trade fairs and other sources.
Maddy herself attends auctions as well as buying single items of special interest or quality, or selling them on commission.
House clearances are also undertaken. The result is an enormously varied range of things to see and buy. A vast array of bygone treasures.
New ventures include the range of new and vintage jewellery sold by Nikki Sharman. Indoor and outdoor plants and herbs supplied by Goring resident Chris Skidmore are also very popular.
Barbara’s Bric-a-Brac is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm and 2.15pm to 5pm. There are still some spaces to let for traders. Call (01491) 873032 for full details.
