Mayor's surprise visit to 100th birthday girl

A visit from the mayor brought a smile to a special birthday girl on Saturday.

Elsie Sable, of Farmers Way, Maidenhead, celebrated her 100th birthday with a large party attended by friends and family.

But when Royal Borough mayor Cllr Asghar Majeed walked through the door with a bouquet of flowers, she had eyes for no-one else.

The mayor gave her a kiss and admired her telegram from the Queen before presenting Elsie with a card of his own. "It's not as good as your other one," he joked.

The party was hosted by friends Jacs and Stewart Fisher who live with Elsie. Mrs Fisher said: "She's just a character. Even though she's been ill recently she just keeps fighting back and was determined to make it to her 100th."

Popular Elsie, who attends the Cox Green Lunch Club and the Church of the Good Shepherd, in Highfield Lane, was born in Woodley and moved to Cox Green 72 years ago.

She had one son, who has passed away, but was joined at her celebration by sister Queenie Beasley, 96, of Burnham, and Queenie's daughter and son-in-law Christine and Ian Mace.
