HENLEY HAWKS 1sts ran out 35-27 winners in their Maidenhead and District League Premier Division clash with WOKINGHAM on Monday evening.
In a physical encounter played out in gusty winds, the Hawks showcased a seamless display of teamwork, with each player contributing to the set plays.
Sarah Filby, a defensive force, acted as the linchpin, disrupting Wokingham’s attacking moves and enabling smooth transitions to attack. Her relentless efforts created opportunities for Katie Bayfield, whose precision in goal attempts added crucial points to the scoreboard.
Centre George Robertson orchestrated set plays with precision, exploiting gaps in the opposition’s defence while Sammy Coff’s added flair to the Hawks’ attacking play and Alex Jacob found the net with accuracy.
Borrowed player Zoe Overall’s robust play prevented Wokingham’s advances, while Chanti Stubbs exhibited resilience as goalkeeper, making critical saves.
Hawks executed set plays flawlessly, resulting in a first-quarter 10-8 lead. As the game progressed, the Hawks maintained their relentless pace, orchestrating coordinated attacks and solidifying their defence, leading 16-14 in the second quarter and 26-20 by the end of the third.
In the final quarter the Hawks sttreched their lead to eight goals to record victory.
Last Saturday in the Reading and District League Division 1, HENLEY HAWKS 1sts went down to a 47-27 defeat against TILEHURST.
The Hawks defence of Charlotte Hopper, Lydia Johnston and Sarah Filby managed to fend off and intercept many attempts while centre Judy Goforth orchestrated plays and Emma Robinson helped with attacking moves.
Katie Bayfield and Sammy Coff combined well in attack but at half-time Tilehurst had built up a 24-13 lead.
As the second half unfolded, the Hawks intensified their efforts, but were unable to match their opponents who raced away to win by 20 goals. Defender Lydia Johnson was named Hawks’ player of the match.
