HAVING previously worked in the computing industry, Karen Musgrave Hill has been surprised at the following her vibrant contemporary botanical art is gaining.
It all started in 2010 when her husband had to have a brain operation. To hasten his recovery, she suggested they attend a course in botanical painting with coloured pencils.
Before long, Karen, who lives in the Hambleden valley, was hooked.
But it wasn’t until the following year, with her husband’s encouragement, that she entered four drawings for assessment to the Royal Horticultural Society’s picture advisory committee.
Her work was assessed to be of a high enough standard to be exhibited at RHS shows. Later in 2011 she entered her work for assessment to the Society of Floral Painters. It was approved and she was offered full membership.
Karen now exhibits annually with the SFP and the Society of Botanical Artists, and in 2015 after many months of research and work, exhibited with the RHS at their spring show and was awarded their gold medal.
In 2015 Karen started her own local botanical art workshops. She has been thrilled at the feedback — including comments such as “inspirational”, “loved every second” and “very well planned”.
Karen says her art is the most perfect way to relieve stress, forget what’s going on around you, recharge your batteries and relax.
