Coins found in field are declared treasure

TWENTY-ONE coins found in a field in Stoke Row has been declared treasure.

An inquest at County Hall in Oxford found that the coins met the criteria to be treasure as they were more han 300 years old and contained more than 10 per cent precious metal.

Coroner Nicholas Mr Graham said that some of the coins depicted “a head in a circle” and “cross on steps”.

The coins were found between January 1, 2018, and September 1, 2020 by metal detectorist Jon Long.

They will now be sold to a museum once their value has been determined by the Government’s treasure valuation committee. The Oxfordshire Museums Service expressed an interest in buying the coins.

In October 2017 Mr Long unearthed a collection of more than 50 items in Bix, including a decorated bracelet from the Bronze Age, from 1400 to 1200BC.
