Money talks

John Glen MP, parliamentary private secretary to the Chancellor Philip Hammond, attended assembly at the Oratory School in Woodcote on February 6 when he presenting “thought for the day” with particular reference to the fundamental British values of democracy and the wider responsibilities of a politician.

Sixth form economics student then took part in a question and answer session with Mr Glen on a wide range of economic policy issues, including government debt, Brexit, funding and managing the NHS, housing and productivity.

Mr Glen gave very clear and detailed answers, providing the boys interested in becoming politicians with much food for thought. Everyone agreed it had been an inspiring opportunity to gain a first-hand insight into the workings of the Treasury and of the challenges facing the economy.

Carole McKenna, head of economics, said the school was very grateful to Mr Glen for taking the time to visit.
