POLICE checks have failed to catch lorry drivers who pass through Watlington illegally.
Sgt Steve Hookham told a meeting called to discuss the problem at the town pavilion on Friday that two recent sweeps had not resulted in enforcement action.
He said a team of regular and police community support officers had set up at entry points to the town to monitor incoming traffic. They were equipped with automatic number plate recognition cameras as it is often unsafe to pull over a lorry on a narrow road.
They caught several drivers using mobile phones or not wearing seat belts but didn’t catch any lorries breaking the 7.5 tonne limit.
Lorries above this weight are only allowed in Watlington town centre if they can prove they need to be there.
