TWO boys raised money for their football club through the Mayor of Henley Award challenge.
Eli Heywood and Zephyr Gibbon, from Trinity Primary School, are working towards their silver awards and were visited by the Mayor during one of their bake sales at AFC Henley.
The school has been taking part in the challenge since last year when Sarah Miller was mayor. It was started by teacher David Masters and is now run by Clara Hart.
Year 4 children have the option to work towards the bronze award, year 5 to silver and year 6 to gold. For each level, the children are given six weeks, nine weeks and 12 weeks respectively to undergo three types of activity — physical, skill and faith.
Eli and Zephyr, who are in year 5, did their fundraising for their faith activity. Eli, 10, who has been running for his physical activity and cooking for skill, said: “It’s a good thing to do because we give to charity and it gets us out and doing things.”
His father Steven said: “It’s tremendous for them to have this structure for doing it independently outside school.
“They need to use their initiative and think about what to do and how to deliver it. There’s quite a lot to do and they need to be persistent.”
Zephyr’s father Mark said: “They’re working really hard and actively engaging with people.”
The Mayor congratulated the boys and said: “It’s important they give themselves personal goals as well as a goal for the school. I hope this will inspire them to do the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and go on to that next level of personal achievement.”
