Centenarian celebrates milestone with Slough mayor

A great grandfather celebrated his 100th birthday with one of his best ever parties in Upton.

Arnold Butler reached the milestone on Friday.

Celebrations took place at Gurney House residential care home for the elderly in Upton Road, with lots of visitors throughout the day including the mayor of Slough, Cllr Chrissy Small.

Arnold said: "It is the best birthday I have had in many years and one I will always remember."

The well-travelled centenarian was born in Tanzania and worked as a farmer, building contractor on the railways, hunter and prospector for gold.

He has two children, seven grandchildren, as well as great grandchildren.

The recently converted Muslim spends time in the mosque as well doing puzzles and crosswords, and reading newspapers to keep up with what is going on in the world.

Maria Harvey, the home administrator, said: "His a wonderful man. We never tire of listening to him and talking to him about life in general. He is very wise, very gentle, and a pleasure to know."
