Pupils enjoy pancake races to celebrate half term break

CHILDREN at a Henley school took part in pancake races to celebrate the start of the half-term holiday.

Pupils from years 1 to 6 at Valley Road primary competed in their house teams for a special pancake trophy and house points, cheered on by the reception children.

Each team was given a frying pan and tortillas in place of pancakes and raced each other across the length of the school’s artificial grass, stopping at three cones along the way to flip the “pancakes”.

First place was awarded to the Red Kites, who were presented with the trophy and a special tortilla by headteacher Tim Coulson.

The runners-up were the Blue Kingfishers followed by the Green Woodpeckers and the Golden Eagles in third and fourth places.

Golden Eagles were awarded the house points trophy for the most house points awarded in the year so far with house captains Joe Allingham and Finley Currie accepting it from Mr Coulson.

Year six teacher Caroline Lock, who organised the races, said: “It was fantastic. The children participated with great enthusiasm and they really enjoyed actually flipping the ‘pancakes’. It was lovely to see the year six children acting as sports leaders.

“This is something the whole school can enjoy whatever level of sport you’re involved in and it’s a celebration of the half term holiday.”

Mr Coulson said: “It must be the sixth year we have done the races.

“Because we are a single-form entry school this way the children get to know each other through house events.

“They are as much social events as education but that is educational in itself.”
