A PETITION demanding that weekly bin collections in Wokingham borough are retained now has more than 1,350 signatures.
The campaign is being organised by Wokingham Conservatives in response to a consultation by the borough council which wants to move collections to either every two or three weeks.
The Liberal Democrat-led council received more than 9,000 responses during the consultation in December and the executive is due to agree a new waste strategy next month.
John Halsall, who represnts the Remenham, Wargrave and Ruscombe ward for the Tories, said: “I worked very hard under the Conservative administration for 20 years to keep weekly bin collections and the first thing the Liberal Democrats have done is to change it.
“It is a huge loss of amenities and, once done, it is probably irreversible.”
If the petition reaches 1,500 signatures, the issue will have to be debated by the council.
