Excitement, flair and a meal to savour

THE newly refurbished Dog and Badger in Medmenham is truly an experience to savour, writes Karen French.

Set between Henley and Marlow, this fabulous historic period building dates back to the 14th century.

On arrival we walked through the gated entrance with flames above the gates on either side.

Mo Hoffeiner and her team offered us a warm welcome as we were greeted at the fabulous Riva Bar.

Both Mo, as general manager, and head chef Sam Walton have experience working in some of London’s finest restaurants — including Mo’s time at Harvey Nichols’ elegant Fifth Floor restaurant. (She also worked locally at the Hand & Flowers in Marlow.)

Sam, having trained at Leiths School of Food and Wine, worked at the highly praised Bibendum in London’s Fulham Road and other Terence Conran establishments.

Together they have most certainly brought the London excitement, flair and experience with them to the Dog and Badger.

Our waitress for the evening was Carolina, who looked after us with her winning smile. There was an array of delicious options offered with a wide range of seasonal vegetables and herbs from their own garden at Gillman’s Cottage.

Locally sourced ingredients are used wherever possible — all cooked by Sam and his team in their state-of-the-art open kitchen with charcoal grill and wood-fired ovens.

We chose from the delightful la carte menu. I opted for the fresh lobster and prawns in a delicious light seafood sauce on a crispy bed of baby gem lettuce.

My dining companion David chose one of Sam’s new dishes, the venison tartare and venison croquette with wild mushroom. The venison was so tender with a fresh aromatic spice infusion.

For our main I chose the roasted chicken breast with peas, braised baby gem, pancetta and Madeira sauce.

The chicken melted in my mouth and the pancetta and Madeira sauce was truly scrumptious.

David choose the fillets of sea bass, homemade gnocchi, clam and Champagne velouté, which was cooked to perfection.

Dessert was an absolute joy — lemon tart, meringue and fresh raspberries indulged our tastebuds.

The service is impeccable, the food sublime and I would thoroughly recommend the Dog and Badger for an experience to savour.

The venue’s Riva Bar is the place to be. Every Tuesday from 8pm they have live music with various artists to please most musical tastes.

The Medmenham Suite is available for private dining or meetings. The suite even has its own private bar and includes the Moroccan Lounge. There are six luxurious en suite rooms, each of which has been named after gin botanicals — Juniper, Angelica, Cassia, Hibiscus, Honeysuckle and Poppy — and it is situated in the quintessentially English Gillman’s Cottage, a Grade-II listed former ale house in the grounds of the Dog and Badger.

Open seven days a week, the Dog and Badger is on the Henley Road, Medmenham, Buckinghamshire, SL7 2HE. For more information, call (01491) 579944 or visit www.thedogandbadger.com
