Desborough Bowling Club is preparing to host the best young players from across the home nations in the British Isles u25s Women’s International Series next month.

Green Lane will play host to a series of elite level matches featuring the best players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The bowls club has said it’s ‘proud’ to host one of the most prestigious events in the bowls calendar and hope an entry fee of £5 for the entire weekend will attract many people to come down and watch the action unfold.

The series is set to take place on Saturday, February 7 and Sunday, February 8, with 16 players per nation to lock horns on the green in Maidenhead.

The event was established in 1997, and England will go into the series as strong favourites having won 24 of the last 28 titles. They’re also the current champions and will be confident they can retain their crown on home soil.

This is the first time the event has been staged at Desborough, but the club is expected to be in the frame for future events of this size and scale.

The match schedule is as follows:

Saturday:

9.45am – England v Wales | Scotland v Ireland

2.45pm – England v Ireland | Scotland v Wales

Sunday:

9.30am – England v Scotland | Ireland v Wales

A club statement said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to watch elite international sport locally and discover that bowls is a modern, inclusive game for all ages.

“Desborough Bowling Club welcomes you. Bowls is changing and it starts here.”

Desborough hope the series will change perceptions around the sport of bowls and inspire young people to give it a try.

It is already establishing links and partnerships with schools and community groups to further engage with young people and plans to launch junior coaching programmes and develop an academy to bring through the best players from the region.
