DEBBIE McGEE has paid tribute to Caroline Aherne.

The 52-year-old comedian died on Saturday after fighting lung cancer.

Wargrave resident McGee, wife of late magician Paul Daniels, said: “She was wonderful, especially as Mrs Merton.”

She was the subject of one of Aherne’s most iconic moments while appearing on the Mrs Merton Show in 1995.

Mrs Merton asked McGee: “What first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?”, prompting raucous laughter from the audience, fellow guest Kriss Akabusi and McGee herself.

“My interview will be a treasured memory,” said McGee. “I really laughed because I knew it wasn’t her, it was the character. I wasn’t attracted to Paul for his money in any way.”
