IF you are looking for societies, social clubs or other activities, we could be your choice.
The society was founded as an historical lecture society in 1975 and we have an active membership with an interesting and varied timetable of speakers and events.
We usually meet on alternate Wednesdays at 8pm from September until April and during this time there will also be several trips to places of interest, a pre-Christmas theatre visit, a Christmas Party with entertainment and a mini-break in the spring.
We meet in the church hall at Caversham Heights Methodist Church in Highmoor Road.
New members are always welcome and do not need to be residents of Caversham Heights. The current annual subscription is £34 but guests are welcome at £5 per meeting.
We have a full programme of speakers and day trips planned for our 47th season, including a theatre trip to the Mill at Sonning in December and a Christmas party with entertainment.
A five-day mini-break to Lincolnshire in May 2024 is currently being planned.
The talks are as follows:
October 4 — Professor Ted Shepherd on “Global warming and extreme weather”.
October 18 — Cyrilene Small-Tollafield on “The Windrush generation”.
November 1 — Eddy Roach on “The history of Trinity House”.
November 15 — Dr Lindsay Browning on “Improving your sleep and wellbeing”.
December 6 — Christmas celebration with entertainment from members of the Ukrainian community.
January 3, 2024 — Ian Gough on “The Reading wind turbine and green energy”.
January 17 — A representative from the Samaritans on “The work of the Samaritans”.
February 7 — Dr Carrie Zhang on Chinese New Year.
February 21 — Professor Chris Rhodes on “Fracking — friend or foe?”
March 6 — Oliver Burt on “Rubbish — what happens when it leaves my gate?”
March 20 — Roger Crudge on “Bananas — how they are ripened and arrive in perfect condition”.
