AFTER two minutes’ silence for Remembrance Day the chairman welcomed members and visitors to the 515th meeting of Henley Probus Club.

Following a short business update, including reports from the treasurer and secretary, the chairman introduced our guest speaker Sue Remenyi, who gave a talk entitled “Bees and bee keeping”.

Sue, who lives in Kidmore End, has written a number of books on the subject and her talk, assisted by a detailed slide presentation, covered the life of the honey bee, a detailed description of the life and role of the worker bee, the drone bee and the queen bee in and around their bee hives.

This was followed by an explanation of the role and life of wasps and hornets and highlighted the current concern within the UK at the possibility of Asian hornets arriving in Oxfordshire and the serious threat they would pose to native pollination, particularly related to honey bees.

The talk concluded with questions from the audience followed by a very warm message of thanks and appreciation from club members.

The forthcoming talks planned for the New Year are as follows: January 13 — Mark Broomfield, “14 years in the international committee of the Red Cross”.

February 3 — Paul Whittle, “The Gibraltar story”.

March 10 — Jim Donahue, “The Thames Valley, past, present and future”.

Henley Probus meets at Badgemore Park Golf Club on the second Tuesday of each month. It starts with an informal gathering at 10.45am of its members (plus visitors) for a discussion and coffee, with the formal meeting commencing at 11.30am followed by a lunch.

There is also a regular but very informal monthly breakfast meeting which also meets at Badgemore Park.
