A WOMAN known for her “infectious” smile and love of music celebrated her 100th birthday with a party with family and friends.
Gladys Matthews, who lives at the Huntercombe Hall care home in Nuffield, was born on December 18, 1923 in Kingsclere, near Newbury.
She had three sisters and her father worked as a gardener.
Mrs Matthews signed up to the Women’s Land Army during the Second World War. She went on to raise a daughter of her own, Janet. To celebrate her birthday, the home organised a party with a cake and a singer and pianist to entertain everyone. Mrs Matthews received a card from the King and Queen.
When asked what her secret to a long life is, she said: “I keep getting out of bed each day.”
Home manager Pete Watt said: “Gladys has been a resident at Huntercombe Hall for three years and is a much-loved part of the family.
“She brings so much joy to everyone in the home with her infectious smile.”
