Golf captain to support cancer charity that helped her

THE new ladies’ captain at Hennerton Golf Club in Wargrave has chosen to support Macmillan Cancer Support during her year in post.

Lucille Richards was helped by the charity after being diagnosed with stage three breast cancer 13 years ago.

During her 18 months of treatment, she would go to the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre in Middlesex for radiotherapy.

Mrs Richards, 64, said: “They just helped to reassure me. They would go through mindfulness and feelings with people going through cancer and with attendees who had survived. They even did things like make-up, which would help you to not only look good but feel good.

“Many of us have been touched personally by cancer or through loved ones or friends. Any help to ease people’s lives is worth all the hard work and donations for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

She encouraged women of child-bearing age to check themselves.

Mrs Richards said: “I caught it early, which was a good thing, but I would stress the importance for people to examines themselves every month and check for changes and not be scared to ask your doctor for reassurance.” She hopes to raise more than £5,000 during her year and said: “I know how pressured charities, people and businesses are at the moment but any help, big or small, is always appreciated.”

Her captaincy began with the captains’ drive-in. Sixty-eight people took part in the Texas Scramble event in which teams of four competed for points.

Mrs Richards said: “We had a great turnout and the day went really well, despite the cold and I was able to do a straight drive, which was a relief. The clubhouse was buzzing.”

Mrs Richards thanked businesses for donating gifts to the raffle, including Brook Taverner, Brook House Interiors, Hot Gossip, Henley Wines, Temptation, Bagatelle, Laurence Menswear and Booker.

Future events include the captains’ Olympic day on July 13, which includes a £5,000 hole-in-one prize, and a charity day on September 7, which includes a £10,000 hole in one prize, a raffle and silent auction.
