Feeding time in orchard

09:30AM, Monday 29 September 2025

Editor, — This inebriated European Hornet (Vespa crabro) was feasting on fermented apples in my orchard.

These impressive insects hunt a wide range of invertebrates in spring and summer to feed their larvae but turn to scavenging fruit, nectar and sap in autumn.

Despite their size and noise, hornets are pretty harmless to people and only sting if provoked. — Yours faithfully,
