DERVISH is a band more used to playing packed stadiums and festivals such as Rio in front of audiences of thousands, but they come to the intimate setting of the Nettlebed Village Club next Monday, writes Lesley Potter.
The six-piece Irish folk band has accompanied the Irish prime minister on a trade trip to China and represented their homeland in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. They bring their mix of Roots and contemporary music to Nettlebed for one night only, and according to Mike Sanderson of the folk club, it’s one of the biggest acts the venue has ever secured.
The line-up includes lead vocalist Cathy Jordan, who also plays bodhrán and bones, plus five musicians on fiddle, accordion, flute, low whistle, bouzouki, mandola and mandolin.
The band, originally formed in 1989 by five friends from Sligo, takes its name from the word that relates to any group of spiritual people who become enraptured by music.
