THE City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is back at the Hexagon in April with music by Shostakovich, Hummel and Beethoven, writes Lesley Potter.
The orchestra, founded in 1920 by Neville Chamberlain, has great pedigree on the British classical scene. Its inaugural concert was conducted by Sir Edward Elgar. More recently it has been led by Sir Adrian Boult and Sir Simon Rattle.
This time, the orchestra is under the baton of Vassily Sinaisky. Known for his precise but sensuous technique, Sinaisky’s international career was launched in 1973 when he won the Gold Medal at the Karajan Competition in Berlin. He has worked as musical director of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
