AN “exciting” young musician brings her quintet to a regular jazz club in Goring next month, writes Lesley Potter.
Amy Roberts, who has twice won the rising star category of the British Jazz Awards, plays with her own band, the Roberts Jazz Five at the village hall on Friday, June 14.
Bill Jackson, who organises the jazz nights, said he was “delighted” to have secured the booking with Amy and her band.
He said: “She’s a brilliant musician, she plays sax, clarinet and flute. And she’s joined by Tom Kincaid on keyboards, who’s the country’s number one pianist.”
Amy, originally from Cornwall and now in her early twenties, trained at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Her musical roots are in trad jazz, but she has developed her own new take on music from diverse genres.
In addition to having her own band, she also plays with the Chris Barber Big Band and spends a lot of her time these days touring Europe.
She is joined for the one-off evening event by pianist Tom Kincaid, whose rolling style is evocative of the golden age of jazz. He also writes his own compositions, and has written music for a vareity of films, television shows and computer games. The other members of the quintet are John Hallam, who plays saxophones and clarinet, Jim Swinerton on double bass and Nick Millward on drums. Tickets for the gig on Friday, June 14 are £15, available from Inspiration in Goring High Street or on (01491) 875758. There will be a licensed bar.
