HENLEY Choral Society has been awarded a £1,000 grant for music services to the community from the John Lewis Partnership.
The grant, awarded by the Music Matters scheme, is awarded for “specific events or projects that make an outstanding contribution to the musical life of the local community”.
The nomination was supported by the Henley branch of Waitrose, and awarded for the Verdi Requiem workshop, which was held at St Mary’s Church on April 27. The workshop was part of a programme to encourage people to join a double choir and orchestra concert which will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at Reading Concert Hall.
Choral society chairman Melissa Maple said: “We had an astonishing response to the workshop and more than 230 people took part including a number of young people for whom the workshop was free.”
Many of those singers will be part of the 162-strong chorus performing Verdi’s Requiem with Southern Sinfonia and soloists Elisabeth Meister, soprano, Kate Symonds-Joy, mezzo-soprano, David Butt Philip, tenor and James Oldfield, bass.
Making the award, Nigel Brotherton, music appeals advisor to the chairman of the John Lewis Partnership said: “The partnership has a long tradition of supporting music, which has the potential to enhance people’s lives.”
Mrs Maple said: “We are absolutely delighted that Waitrose in Henley and the John Lewis Partnership have chosen to support Henley Choral Society in this way.
“There are still tickets available to experience the magnificent Verdi Requiem at Reading Concert Hall this Saturday. With an outstanding orchestra, soloists and chorus, and now with this kind of backing, we shall be re-doubling our efforts to ensure it is a truly wonderful performance.”
