WOMEN have delved into deepest space, climbed Everest and performed heart surgery but there is still something slightly unexpected about a woman leading a full-on raunchy rock band.
The Bangles did it at Rewind last year. This year it’s the Hideaway Festival’s turn to host a number of female rock artists.
Enter Jess Roberts who fronts the Silver Rays. She leads the seven-piece band and will be performing with her backing singers the Giddi Mamas on the main stage of the Hideaway music festival at Fawley Hill tomorrow (Saturday). A band from Sunderland with their roots firmly in swampy blues and rock ‘n’ roll, their musical style is encapsulated in their song Money (I Like You Better) with a long rock guitar intro.
Meanwhile on another Hideaway stage, Reading-based band Vienna Ditto will be performing their own dark and haunting music reminiscent of a macabre movie soundtrack.
Winner of the Unsigned Band of the Year 2013, Vienna Ditto are led by Hattie Taylor whose spooky melodic music could feature on any Halloween party playlist. Listen out for Liar Liar and I Know His Blood. The band has already performed at Glastonbury.
Another local female-fronted band — this time a little less scary — is Dolly And The Clothes Pegs, a gingham-clad band pumpin out American country music. Lead singer Dolly (AKA Sarah Lucas) performs Rhythm Of The Tracks and Stayin’ Til Morning.
“If everyone turns up it’s a 12-piece band,” says Dolly’s husband Richard. “We call our music Kennet Delta folk.”
Nubiyan Twist, a 10-piece African/world jazz fusion group is led by Nubiya Brandon. Originally from London and Leeds, the band is now busy rehearsing its début album at Henley’s Henwood Studios.
The Silver Rays, Vienna Ditto, Dolly And The Clothes Pegs and Nubiyan Twist are all appearing at Hideaway Music Festival at Fawley Hill on Saturday, August 3.
Tickets are £35 in advance from In the Groove record shop and Magoos in Henley, the Bread Bin in Watlington, the Chequers Inn at Fingest and the Fox and Hounds at Christmas Common, or £40 on the door. =Under 12s are free.
