TCHAIKOVSKY’S fifth symphony is the principal work in a programme of romantic music at West Forest Sinfonia’s latest concert.
Although written at a time when Tchaikovsky was going through a period of self-doubt and personal difficulties, the rather sombre atmosphere of the first movement is soon dispelled.
Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G is a magical composition. The work requires a soloist of outstanding virtuosity and the orchestra is delighted to be joined by Romanian pianist Florian Mitrea.
The third work in the concert is The Wood Nymph, by Sibelius. This tone poem, composed in 1895, only received six performances in the composer’s lifetime and was not rediscovered until 1996.
The text, a poem by Swedish poet Rydberg, tells of how a travelling young student is captivated by the sight of an exotic dancer, seduced by her beauty. Tragedy ensues when the student returns home to his fiancée and explains that he can no longer proceed with their forthcoming marriage.
The concert takes place on Sunday, February 1, at 4.30pm at The Great Hall, Reading University, London Road, Reading.
