Scottish virtuoso percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie will appear with the Henley Symphony Orchestra at the Reading Hexagon on Sunday, March 22.
Dame Evelyn is the first person to have sustained a full-time career as a solo percussionist in the history of classical music, and has performed with the worldâ??s finest orchestras and greatest conductors.
She has been profoundly deaf since the age of 12 and has performed at the opening ceremonies for the Deaf Olympics in Taipei in 2009 and London 2012. In collaboration with British electronic group Underworld, Evelyn led 1,000 drummers for the world premiere of
And I Will Kiss, and also premiered
Calibanâ??s Dream on a newly developed instrument called the Glennie Aluphone to accompany the lighting of the olympic flame.
The HSO and Evelyn will perform Eric Ewazenâ??s
Marimba Concerto. Requiring extraordinary accuracy, it is one of the most beautiful pieces written for the instrument. Evelyn will also perform Askell Massonâ??s
Concert Piece for Snare Drum and Orchestra. This piece includes a cadenza that gives the soloist a chance to demonstrate a range of techniques and colours on the snare drum.
Evelyn Glennieâ??s technical ability and appreciation of the visual elements of percussion take her into the elite, and an opportunity to see her perform locally should not be missed.
The percussion concertos are framed by two of the best-loved works in the classical repertoire: the overture from Rossiniâ??s
The Barber of Seville and Tchaikovskyâ??s
Symphony no 5. The concert will be conducted by HSOâ??s guest conductor Jacques Cohen.
Tickets cost £18 to £22. Call the HSO on 01235 859210, or visit www.henley symphony orchestra.co.uk/ contact
