MORE than 100 children took part in a sponsored busking session in Henley town centre.
The youngsters, who are all students of Henley Music School, performed beneath a marquee in Market Place for two hours on Saturday.
A crowd gathered to watch as different groups played in a range of genres from classical to pop and rock. The school?s flute, recorder, woodwind, keyboard, string and saxophone classes were among those who took part. The Henley Festival Orchestra, which became part of the school last year, also performed several times.
A rock band played famous songs including Happy by Pharrell Williams and Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. A percussion trio played a piece called Kumpo, which is performed at coming-of-age ceremonies in Senegal and the Gambia. Between songs children walked around with buckets collecting money for the school, which was founded in 2010 and is soon to become a registered charity.
Founder Laura Reineke, of Berkshire Road, Henley, said: ?We had a lot of interest from passers-by. It has helped make people aware of what we do and the children had a lot of fun.
?Music benefits every aspect of a child?s life from self-confidence to fine motor skills, playing in groups or even taking part in slightly bonkers events like this.? The school accepts youngsters of all ages and abilities and currently has about 150 pupils. All its tutors are professional musicians and pupils who cannot afford to pay for lessons are taught for free.
