ONE of the best loved and most versatile opera stars of the last 40 years, Sir Willard White’s illustrious career has seen him perform at the most prestigious opera houses and concert halls worldwide.
Now he is coming to the Concert Hall in Reading for the latest in the town’s Classical Music Alive series of concerts on Saturday, October 31.
Sir Willard was born in Jamaica, where he commenced his musical training at the Jamaican School of Music and then went on to the Juilliard School in New York, eventually specialising as a bass baritone.
In 1989, White performed the role of Othello in Trevor Nunn’s production for the Royal Shakespeare Company, alongside Sir Ian McKellen as Iago and Imogen Stubbs as Desdemona.
Awarded the CBE in 1995, he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2004 and is currently president of the Royal Northern College of Music.
White’s Reading concert aims to showcase his versatility. Among the works to be performed are Kurt Weill’s settings of Walt Whitman poems, Copland’s
Old American Songs, and a selection of much-loved show tunes including
I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’ from Gershwin’s
Porgy and Bess — all expertly accompanied by pianist Eugene Asti.
