ACCLAIMED pianist Samantha Ward joins the West Forest Sinfonia for its first orchestral concert of the year on Sunday (January 31).
The Great Hall on the University of Reading’s London Road campus is the venue for a programme that opens with Brahms’ Haydn Variations — although there is uncertainty as to whether Haydn was the composer of the well-known St Anthony Chorale from which Brahms drew his inspiration.
Next up is a recital of Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No 2, featuring Samantha Ward. The composer’s son Maxim was the soloist on the first performance of the work, which was dedicated to him.
The programme closes with Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony No 3 , which he was inspired to compose while on a walking tour of the country in 1829, during which he and a friend visited the ruins of Holyrood Chapel, Edinburgh.
The concert starts at 4.30pm. Tickets are £15 with concessions available.
