A SINGER-SONGWRITER who knocked the Grease soundtrack off the number one spot in the album charts back in 1978 is playing the Crooked Billet in Stoke Row later this month.
“Well, Well,” said the Rocking Chair was only New Jersey-born Dean Friedman’s second album, following on from his self-titled debut the previous year.
In the UK, Friedman went on to hit number three with his 1978 single Lucky Stars, which instantly went gold.
The other hits for which he is best known include Lydia, Rocking Chair, McDonald’s Girl and Woman of Mine.
Over the years, Friedman has forged a close connection to the Henley area, appearing at the town’s literary festival last year.
For the past 10 years he has made an annual pilgrimage to perform at the Crooked Billet.
Chef-proprietor Paul Clerehugh said: “It’s unreal for an artist of this calibre to fly across the Atlantic and entertain within the intimacy of this sleepy country pub.”
This year, however, Friedman is also embarking on an extensive UK tour to promote Words & Music — a two-CD collection of the singer’s favourite tracks from his decades-spanning career.
As part of his tour, he is playing the Crooked Billet on Tuesday, June 21, and Wednesday, June 22. A £25 music cover charge applies.
In the meantime, on Monday night the pub will be playing host to comic songwriter Richard Digance.
Paul Clerehugh said: “Many people sing, play guitar and tell stories, but not many have supported Steve Martin or played a guitar duet with Brian May. Richard Digance has.”
The full regular menu will be available and a £20 music cover charge applies.
For tickets and table reservations, call the Crooked Billet on (01491) 681048.
