Visitors take the Wargrave 10k honours

MORE than 400 people took part in the 34th annual Wargrave 10km on Sunday.

The runners set off from the recreation ground off Recreation Road at 10am and followed a circular route through Holy Cross and Crazies Hill before completing a final lap of the field on their way to the finish line.

This year’s race was won by Alexander Miller, of Belgrave Harriers, who crossed the line in a time of 33 minutes and 43 seconds.

David Lewis, of Reading Athletics Club, came second in 33 minutes and 50 seconds and third was Datchet Dashers’ James Samson who came home in 34 minutes and 33 seconds.

The first female runner home was Samantha Amend, of Belgrave Harriers, in 37 minutes and 28 seconds.

The highest-placed competitor from Wargrave Runners was Alex Scott, who finished in 37 minutes and 27 seconds. More than 100 children took part in a fun run around the recreation ground before the main race. This was won by nine-year-old Casper Chillingworth, from Marlow.

There were stalls selling food and drink and massages were on offer to the runners.

Organiser Mandy Doward said: “It went very well. We had a total of 409 finishers and lots more children in the kids’ race.

“We’ve already had a lot of good feedback, with people saying thank-you for holding it. Some people have said it’s their favourite race to take part in. It was a little wet on the day, which is perfect for the runners but not so much for the marshals.

“I want to say thanks to all the volunteers who stood around the course in the rain.”

The event, which was sponsored by Physiocare of Twyford, is expected to have raised several thousand pounds, which will be split between local and national charities, including Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.
