Chaplain dies suddenly

THE chaplain of Shiplake College has died.

Reverend Chris Briggs passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Wednesday last week. He was 64.

Rev Briggs had been chaplain at the independent school since 2019, having previously been the chaplain at Haileybury School in Hertfordshire for 19 years.

He helped with the combined cadet force, extra-curricular activities and minibus driving.

He was due to retire next summer and planned to move to Norfolk with his wife, Jo. The couple had three children.

In a tribute, the school said: “Chris was an exceptional man who stood right at the heart of our school community.

“He loved our ‘community’ — it was the key part of what he thought was special about Shiplake.

“The sadness we all feel is a direct reflection of the great love and respect we had for our ‘rev’ and we will miss his wisdom, kindness, support and humour.”

The college has created an online page for tributes at
