Henley’s Mortimer and Scott secure junior titles

HENLEY Tennis Club lost out in a touch league clash but gain success on the junior circuit last week.

In the Oxfordshire League, Henley’s men’s B team put in a gritty display despite losing 5-3 at sixth-placed Oxford City C.

In bright conditions, Jeremy Wright and Gordon Stoddart led the charge with a convincing 6–2, 6–2 win against the City second pair before splitting sets 6–2, 2–6 against the firsts, Wright’s sliced backhand drop shot proving effective as ever.

Jim Neale and Dan Barr were edged out 7-5, 7-5 in a tight contest against the top pair, with Neale covering every corner of the court, and later fell to the second pair. Despite the defeat, Henley earned three league points.

Meanwhile, Henley’s futures squad delivered impressive results during half term.

Max Mortimer claimed two U12 titles and a third-place finish across three events, showing resilience and composure to turn matches around and close out finals under pressure.

Sammy Andrews made a strong start to the year in U9 competition, finishing third and sixth in his first two events of 2026. Elliot Ayoola marked his U9 debut with an opening-match win against more experienced opponents.

William Scott enjoyed an outstanding run, winning a U8 tournament in Devon before stepping up to U9 level at just seven years old, losing only to the eventual winner.
