HOME Secretary Theresa May presented awards to junior footballers at Wargrave Girls’ annual open day.
The Maidenhead MP, who is the club’s president, was the guest of honour at Saturday’s ceremony.
The recipients included the club’s ladies’ team, which has won back-to-back league titles, and the under 11 and under 12 sides, which both won cup competitions this year.
More than 100 girls and their parents attended the event at the recreation ground off Recreation Road. It began with an all-ages tournament before the awards presentation and then a barbecue.
Mrs May said: “It’s great to see so many youngsters getting involved in sport. This is the second largest all-girls football club in the country, which is fantastic, and it gets better every year. It can be difficult to get girls into sport but it’s just as important for them as it is for boys. This is a great club and depends on the volunteers who give up their time to run it.”
Club chairman Bob Austen said: “It was a fantastic day. As soon as Theresa stepped out of the car the sun came out! She was on top form and gave a very nice speech. She’s always good value and a wonderful local MP.
“It has been a terrific year for the club — we’ve passed the 200 players mark and there’s no sign of things slowing down. Girls are attracted to the club because it’s accessible and parents feel their girls are nurtured and encouraged.”
