AN impressive display by HURLEY’S development side containing a mixture of senior players and colts saw them defeat PINKNEYS GREEN at Shepherds Lane on Sunday.
Hurley skipper Dave Simoes won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first in a 40 over contest. Simoes opened the bowling in tandem with Mo Basharat and started with two maidens. Basharat picked up the early wicket of Nick Jones.
Scott Taylor employed some good swing to get rid of Tim Snapes and Andy Ryan. Mark Peck and Will Heyes steadied the ship with a partnership of 39 for the fourth wicket.
The introduction of Jamie Calliss bowling his chinamen turned the game, dismissing Heyes and Dan Smith with consecutive deliveries in his second over.
Raff Bowler also put in a good spell with the ball while Archie McGuinness performed well behind the stumps after taking over from Mike Walton at the half-way stage. Steve Jinman was the only other Pinkneys batsman to reach double figures as the Hurley bowling and fielding kept a tight rein on proceedings. A run out by McGuinness off the final delivery of the innings saw Pinkneys Green finish on 136-9.
Hurley opened the run chase with the father and son partnership of Mike and Josh Cole. The scoreboard had failed to register a run when Josh slapped a Mark Peck delivery to Ryan at cover in the second over. George Lewis went after the bowling with some vigour but could only manage a 13 before finding a fielder with an aerial shot.
At 22-2 after five overs the match was in the balance but a partnership of 58 between Scott Taylor and Mike Cole put their side on the right track. Taylor was beaten in the flight by Matt Cowley and Snapes’ sharp glove work did the rest. Cole retired on reaching his half-century to allow the youngsters to bat but McGuinness and Calliss failed to take advantage. At 104- 5 Hurley were favourites to win the match and a partnership of 29 between Simoes and Walton took them to within four runs of victory. When Simoes played on to Jinman, Raff Bowler was left to score the winning runs to give Hurley victory with 10 overs to spare.
