LAST Sunday turned out to be one of the best days in the club’s history for GS Henley riders.
Lydia Brookes, riding under her race team Sigma Sport WRT, came third in the National Women’s Masters Road Race Championship while GS Henley secured all three podium spots in the supporting category 3/4 Priests Ford Support Race in which they fielded four riders.
After five miles of the 45 Paul Elcock attacked, got a gap ahead of the peloton and stayed in the lead to win by five minutes.
In the rest of the race, the second of four ascents of Pitchcott Hill split the bunch up while there was still some fight in it to chase Elcock.
Pete Ganderton patrolled the front of the bunch and annoyed would-be attackers by jumping all over their moves to the point that with 1.5 laps to go the bunch had completely given up.
From an earlier average speed of 24mph the pace dropped to 23mph average by the end, but the pack had been decisively broken up by the crosswind and the second time up the hill, so only 30 riders made up the group who would contest the remaining places.
Ganderton was on the front towards the finish, and forced a hard pace up the gentler section. This worked out well for team mates James Archibald and Ben Wrigglesworth who had left it a little late to get into decent positions, but with a much reduced bunch it was possible to move up and peg themselves at a nice distance from the front of the bunch. Archibald picked a spot with 350m to go and passed Wrigglesworth to finish second with his team mate third.
