THE Fawley Hill steam and vintage weekend last month was a huge success, raising many thousands of pounds for more than 30 charities.

Lady McAlpine, who organised and hosted it, was a little uncertain about whether to repeat the event for fear of upsetting her neighbours in Fawley. However, while there were just two complaints, she received dozens of emails and letters full of praise, so this fabulous extravaganza will be back next year.

Besides, she has another reason for holding it, which she revealed at a splendid thank-you party at her home on Saturday night for all those who had helped her — she will be 70 next year. Not only that, she told guests, but the event was likely to be repeated in 2016 — the year her husband Sir William turns 80.

Not surprisingly, this news was greeted by a round of applause from the party-goers. Full steam ahead!
