TWO competitions for land-lubbers are being introduced at this year’s newly named Thames Traditional Boat  Festival.

The Kenton Theatre is sponsoring an award for the man and woman “most fittingly attired in keeping with the age of the older vessels on parade on the water”.

There will also be a prize for the best piece of work produced by an artist on the bank (or on a boat).

This will be judged by Ian Cryer, president of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, who will be there working as he loves to paint “en plein air”.

The festival will take place at Fawley Meadows on Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19 and the star attraction will be Gloriana.

Lady McAlpine, who is now one of the organisers, tells me that she is on the lookout for rowers to man the oars of the royal barge for when she takes to the water.

As a regular visitor to the royal regatta, she shouldn’t be short of candidates this week!
